July 26, 2008 The DUI Mario Kart Experiment

It’s the question that has gone unanswered since Jesus first debated it with Abraham: how much does drinking actually impair your driving skills? Now is the time to answer it, through the most accurate of measurements: Wii Mario Kart!

We measured three players while sober, with around .04% blood alcohol content (BAC,) and around .08% BAC. This all occurred on the “Mall” level. The results are interesting…

Player 0 BAC 0.04 BAC 0.08 BAC Avg Time
Andrew 3:45 3:36 3:36 3:39
Mike 3:26 3:22 3:22 3:23
Remi 3:35 3:23 3:23 3:27
Averages 3:35 3:27 3:27 3:30

The results are interesting! Notice that we completed the courses quicker across the board with alcohol in the blood, and all three of us had the same times with .04 and .08 BAC.

So what is the conclusion? Drinking and driving is obviously faster, and should be encouraged! (But only in video gaming, kids.)

Some other numbers, outside of the actual experiment:

Closest race: Becky VS Remi, where the best man (that would be me) won by one second. (3:31)

Best racer: Mike, averaging 3:23.

Worst racer: Geneva, averaging 3:52. (Probably not below 0.04 BAC at any point, however.)

There are comments Post yours

at least i won worst racer!

one more thing that screen shot is not of the “mall” when did Andrew let you guys switch levels?

Oh, I just grabbed a screenshot from Google, but good point, I should mention the level in the post.

Andrew was very strict, and levels weren’t changed until after the rematch that didn’t happen.

I’m not going to lie, I’m still really bitter about my loss.

Becky, you can have a rematch any day. I enjoyed throwing my awesome victory in your face!

For the record I did beat Remi at Mario. He has now been beat by the “worst” driver so what does that make him? Yep Becky will totally kick your ass. I also believe Andrew can beat Remi.

Yes, I lost, I suck, yada yada yada… I don’t really count it though, as it was non-conference play.

Becky and Andrew don’t stand a chance in hell.

You need a control, who plays w/o drinking, cause people will get better at playing as they get drunk!

Well, good point, but it would have been a bit cold hearted to stop one poor soul from drinking.

No, no, no, you need a control, who plays w/o drinking, because people will get better at playing the course as they play it several times. If you really want to measure the effect of alcohol on performance, you should isolate it as the variable measured, particularly from course-learning, which arguably is present in your study.

Actually, we (the three people who took part in the DUI part) have played the course to death, and I doubt these three drive throughs would make much of a differential in terms of a learning curve.

I think it’s meaningless without the control too.

The problem is that as you get more drunk (i.e. play longer), you also get a better feel for the maps, and having a good feel for the maps makes you a lot better at mario kart.

Not only do you need a control group/player, but also you should control for the presentation order. For example, not only some players should play a little more drunk every time, but also the other way round (playing every 15 or 20 minutes as alcohol is progressively metabolized out of blood).

At least two people have nearly pointed it out, you need to take data points with decreasing BAC too, to compensate for a learning effect.

Interesting experiment. I think it might have something to do with the fact that you’re better at ignoring distractions when drunk, and that’s a really important skill when playing Mario Kart (I sometimes turn off the music to improve lap times).

Which means drinking and real-world driving should really be discouraged.

.1 is where it gets different. Plus try playing Battle or fucking coin runners - the lamest invention ever - with a .1 or higher. Let’s see some stats on that!

This is just damn it beautiful. Great experiment….mostly because drunk mario kart should be an olympic event

[...] The DUI Mario Kart Experiment: apparently people are better Kart drivers when they’re under the influence. I could have told them that. [...]

wow lets *DUI* it again and invite all of these linkers.

Memories. I use to do this on Nin.64. I gotta go get the new version!!!

Alcohol gives you the ability to play Mario Kart with something I like to call “reckless abandon”. I have found that a few drinks does improve my rank in online play. I have also found that a few too many drinks lowers my rank. Reckless abandon turnes into just plain recklessness.

Interesting

Did you take into account that you played the game time and time again slowly improving your skills, so it may be that that coincided with the drinking as well.

I can with some certainty say that those of us who were timed had played the level in question enough times for it to be second-hand.

I once played a game with a few friends, wherein the winner had to take a shot for every race they won in Mario Kart for the GC. I won every race until finally I couldn’t play anymore. I was so drunk by the end that I couldn’t even walk, and yet I had beat them in every race up to that point.

What the hell happened here? I think maybe we should do this experiment again. Maybe we should take into effect how rad Yoshi is and rocks everyone’s world and how much other players suck…like Toad…I’m just saying (and yes, I am still bitter..I would like a rematch, please).

I don’t know Becky, I think Toad has beaten you 100% of the time. But hey, yes, I’ll give you a rematch.
